Business v Hollywood

•February 24, 2007 • Leave a Comment

A debate about politics, business and hollywood made me think about what would i like to write about.

Politics is powerplay supported by Business and hollywood pooling in money to make the government work for them.

So if i write about Politics i write about both business and hollywood.

So what then do i write about hollywood or Business?

Hollywood is the buzz word. It has glamour style and a hollowness beneath all that so its like an empty shell wrapped in different words to make it look glamorous.

Who has a life at the end of the day in hollywood? Who doesn’t compromise morals to climb the rugs to success?

But i don’t want to write about such gossip and add fuel to fire but make it look so cool and good at the same time.

Celebrity scandals are good read, tabloids churn out loads of them but at the end of the day i wonder if we really love to read what went wrong and whose dating who.

Is it that we read what we get or is it that beacuse we read it we get the same kind of things again and again.

So hollywood is struck off my list of subjects to write about.

Business sounds like a nice word but at the same time has the power cap on which says everything comes with a price.

So business has big bucks involved, it has corruption, money, power play and rules more lives then hollywood does.

Countries, economies, trade treaties, money changing hands it has speed, it has spirit it has the ability to make big diffrences in lives of citizens.

Thats what i want to do write about the things that make a difference. But then who reads the business news not the man on the street whose thought is to work and get home in the evening to his children and wife and be happy he earned his bread today.

This news is read by the businessman in the industry and they are the ones who make the decisions that change the lives of many. So maybe starting at the base writing something that will help make decisions and change lives will give me a sense of satisfaction.

I might be wrong but thats my perception about things right now. You can shatter my perseptions….

Where are we heading?

•February 10, 2007 • 1 Comment

Getting to think of the pace at which we are progressing I wonder where we are heading to. The fast evolving technology will save some lose some and then what remains in the end?

Though i am not an ardent sports fan the whole debate put forth by professor Clyde H. Bentley ( Ph.D, Missouri School of Journalism) makes you think about where are we going.

He says in the article that:

“Today the International Olympic Committee gave athletes permission to blog
at Olympic games.  While that seems a tame and sensible update of the
rules, remember that (as AP said) under Olympic rules, athletes, coaches and other team officials are barred from functioning as a “journalist or in any other media capacity” during the games. This is meant to protect the rights of the accredited media.”

What he says is true and the commercialism in media, the big bucks involved in the game through exclusive broadcasting rights and other media rights will have to watch out. If Blogging is allowed then we would have exclusive coverage of games even before a media forecasts it. With the technology in our pockets its easy to shoot through cellphones and post it immediately onto blogs. Some phones already have high definition zoom and excellent video quality. With all this 3G technology in your pocket its going to be a matter of seconds before your friends can view the game live on blogs and groups with just you inthe audience watching it.

Now the question is with all this free of cost to the audience would subscription of exclusive sports channels drop? Would people instead go to you-tube and watch the highlights over and over at their convenience? So if advertising revenue drops since subscriptions drop will players be paid the high cost and who will go to the matches and shell out bucks for a ticket to watch the match live.

Anyways you can hardly see whose running where on the field from the distance at which you sit. you watch it on the huge screens around the stadium and be happy about the exited atmos around you.

So what will we all prefer to do? Will we just sit at home quietly with a couple of beers, a tub of pop-corn and watch youtube at our leasuire with friends together to create the atmos.

And then who will raise the money for the new stadiums, improved facilities for the sport and then finally the sport may decline. There is so much uncertainty of a future dominated my technology.

Will we all be coach potatoes? Where will all this lead to? The uncertainty is the only certainty we have.

Why be a Journalist?

•February 5, 2007 • 9 Comments

I am on my way to be a journalist….

what does that statement really mean?

Does it mean i want to earn a fat salary because media is the next big thing or do i want to change the order of things or do i want to just say what i feel and present an opinion?

Today as i sit at my desk pondering the question over and over in my mind, a frightening question shakes the very foundation of my dream.

I say i want to be a Journalist because I want to represent the voice of people who are ignored or not given their rights, which means I want to change the order of things.

Even as I say it do I believe it?

At the end of the day its my opinion about what those people really feel, why are they oppressed or deprived of their rights or why are they ignorant.

In a space of 300cm and with 250 to 300 words i am asked to tell a story of more then a 1000 people, who are suffering with three quotes which represent what all want to say.

At the end when i speak to three people out of 1000 what guarantees do I have that everyone feels the same, I chose to ask these people so its my discretion.

The product is manufactured by me set in specifications of word count and layout churned out to an audience who hears what I choose to say.

Lets take the second instance, I want to be a journalist beacuse I want to state what i feel and shape the opinions of millions who read what i write and hang on to each word.

Doesn’t the situation sound like “Opinion of few is the will of all” the same thing as in the first instance, it boils down to I choose a person to give his opinion, and select from them words that tell the story I am writing.

The third thing is being honest. I want to be a Journalist because there is money in the profession you are paid to praise some, uplift the few effluent people.

You eat good food, drink the best wine, talk good about the host, clutch a goody bag and leave feeling happy.

The next day you go in type out good things and make up stories that then paint glorious pictures about the person or his organisation.

As a Journalist in today’s world I am unsure about the values and objectivity that goes along with this profession.

The commercialised media is a mouthpiece of the rich who can throw around money and buy power to influence popular opinions.

So where do the honest people, who want to practice unadulterated journalism (If such thing still exists) stand in this commercial marketplace?

Hello world!

Journalism is something i always wanted to do.

writing about anything and everything is not Journalism…

Free writing should have a name i suppose to differenciate it from Journalism

Addressing serious issues and concerns about things that need to change, stating facts and not opinions is Journalism.

Its about a change that your pen should strive to create and inspire people to change for the better.

So are you ready to be a Journalist?
