Where are we heading?
Getting to think of the pace at which we are progressing I wonder where we are heading to. The fast evolving technology will save some lose some and then what remains in the end?
Though i am not an ardent sports fan the whole debate put forth by professor Clyde H. Bentley ( Ph.D, Missouri School of Journalism) makes you think about where are we going.
He says in the article that:
“Today the International Olympic Committee gave athletes permission to blog
at Olympic games. While that seems a tame and sensible update of the
rules, remember that (as AP said) under Olympic rules, athletes, coaches and other team officials are barred from functioning as a “journalist or in any other media capacity” during the games. This is meant to protect the rights of the accredited media.”
What he says is true and the commercialism in media, the big bucks involved in the game through exclusive broadcasting rights and other media rights will have to watch out. If Blogging is allowed then we would have exclusive coverage of games even before a media forecasts it. With the technology in our pockets its easy to shoot through cellphones and post it immediately onto blogs. Some phones already have high definition zoom and excellent video quality. With all this 3G technology in your pocket its going to be a matter of seconds before your friends can view the game live on blogs and groups with just you inthe audience watching it.
Now the question is with all this free of cost to the audience would subscription of exclusive sports channels drop? Would people instead go to you-tube and watch the highlights over and over at their convenience? So if advertising revenue drops since subscriptions drop will players be paid the high cost and who will go to the matches and shell out bucks for a ticket to watch the match live.
Anyways you can hardly see whose running where on the field from the distance at which you sit. you watch it on the huge screens around the stadium and be happy about the exited atmos around you.
So what will we all prefer to do? Will we just sit at home quietly with a couple of beers, a tub of pop-corn and watch youtube at our leasuire with friends together to create the atmos.
And then who will raise the money for the new stadiums, improved facilities for the sport and then finally the sport may decline. There is so much uncertainty of a future dominated my technology.
Will we all be coach potatoes? Where will all this lead to? The uncertainty is the only certainty we have.
